COMING TOGETHER TO PROVIDE FOOD FOR POWDERHORN PARK RESIDENTS
In the wake of George Floyd’s killing, Twin Cities neighborhoods are coming together like never before to build stronger, more equitable communities. Hunger is in the way of this progress and healing. Second Harvest Heartland has mobilized, alongside neighborhood and community organizations to ensure everyone is fed and fueled for the work ahead.
Last week we joined forces with local hunger-relief organizations and the City of Minneapolis to coordinate a large-scale food distribution in the South Minneapolis neighborhood of Powderhorn Park.
Mariano Espinoza, Latino Community Specialist from the City of Minneapolis led the effort to get food and supplies where they are needed now.
Second Harvest Heartland delivered more than 20,000 pounds of food to nearly 1,000 families. Guests received fresh watermelon, frozen meat, yogurt and a variety of fresh produce. Local hunger-relief organization The Food Group supplemented this food with items requested by Latino community members including masa flour, beans, rice, limes and nopales.
Families with little ones were greeted by their favorite popular characters as they waited in line for food, adding to the hopeful atmosphere of the event.
This community-led effort would not have been possible without volunteers and Twin Cities Food Justice, The Food Group, the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.
