Our 5-year Strategic Plan

Second Harvest Heartland adopted a five-year strategic plan in 2019 designed to help us respond to the changing needs of the community, target our innovations and raise the visibility of hunger as a pervasive, but solvable problem.

Second Harvest Heartland’s 2030 Strategic Plan comes from months of rigorous planning, conversations and listening with staff members, partners, leaders, and our community, and input from our organization’s board of directors. We know more than ever that hunger is widespread and entrenched. We need bold new solutions, stronger connections, and a way to clearly measure our progress so we can understand what’s working.

Our strategic priority is to cut hunger in half by reimagining hunger relief and inspiring more engagement and investment.

This means reducing hunger today by increasing access to emergency food. We do this by building or redesigning partnerships to sustainably reach the communities most impacted by hunger. We also are importing network efficiency through new processes, structure, and technologies.

We also know that despite our best efforts, food shelf visits are climbing to record levels. Therefore, we must invest in preventing hunger tomorrow. We do this by ensuring neighbors can afford the food they need. Second Harvest Heartland must serve as a convener and advocate for policy that addresses hunger and its root causes, as well as leverage partnerships to connect neighbors to support beyond food.

Finally, we must track our progress to ensure that Second Harvest Heartland remains effective and accountable in our work. This includes building our staff’s capacity to test, measure, learn, and act with urgency.

We know that it takes a community to end hunger. Second Harvest Heartland can't deliver a single meal without our large and dedicated team of staff, volunteers, donors and community and agency partners working right alongside us. End Hunger Together is a way to honor the shared nature of our work, as well as focuses on the collaborative work in front of us as we Make Hunger History.
